Rajendra Petkar serves as President and Chief Technology Officer at Tata Motors, where he has championed the company’s push into zero-emission mobility. His leadership has been instrumental in launching India’s first fuel cell-powered bus and accelerating the rollout of battery electric vehicles. In FY25, Tata Motors filed a record 250 patents and 148 design applications, securing five major accolades for innovation and IP. Petkar also represents Tata Motors on key automotive forums and serves as a nominated director on the board of Tata Cummins Ltd.
An M.Tech in Thermal and Fluid Engineering from IIT Bombay, Petkar joined Tata Motors in 1989 and has since led its R&D and product engineering verticals. He spearheaded the transformation of the company’s product lineup, including the “New Forever” car series and “Future Ready” commercial vehicles. He also played a pivotal role in steering the transition from BS4 to BS6 emission norms and advancing connected vehicle platforms and occupant safety features.
His work has helped position Tata Motors as a leader in sustainable mobility. Petkar’s forward-looking vision continues to shape the company’s efforts in clean transportation technologies, making Tata Motors a front-runner in India’s EV revolution.
